INTRODUCTION

BetOnline operates several different gambling venues online, including a casino, racebook, and sportsbook through its popular BetOnline.ag platform. Opened in 2006 (with headquarters in Panama), BetOnline began its life as a sportsbook-only property, adding other options in the years since opening.

BetOnline.ag is a popular choice for mobile sports betting in the United States.

This ease of accessibility is a major selling point for bettors in parts of the world where legal wagers are rare. When other sportsbooks became more accessible by releasing applications for smartphones and tablets around 2010, BetOnline took notice. Rather than create a series of apps for different gadgets, BetOnline built a unique mobile website, accessible to users of iPads and iPhones as well as other devices that run on Android and other operating systems.

INSTALL & WELCOME BONUS

For new mobile customers, the most important promotion is BetOnline’s equivalent of a welcome bonus. New customers can earn up to $50.00 in what the service calls “free play” in exchange for a losing first wager. Should a bettor’s first wager be successful, no bonus is paid out, but in case of a loss, BetOnline will reimburse the customer’s account up to a maximum of $50. Terms and conditions apply.

A similar bonus offer is made to customers who want to try out the sites In-Play wagering system. This bonus, worth up to $25, acts as a reimbursement for a customer’s initial In-Play wager should it fail to pay off. This promotion is available to mobile customers and is subject to similar terms and conditions as the welcome bonus described above.

FEATURES

BetOnline Mobile does not offer as many special features as other mobile bookmaker apps – the service has a smaller customer base than the other big names in the business, and with limited access to betting markets and a lightweight system of bonuses and promotions, it should come as no surprise that this stripped-down mobile Web app is not as feature-laden as native apps produced by bigger bookmakers.

An extension of that feature is the lack of a software download to use the service. This is one positive thing about using a Web-based application rather than a native one – customers access BetOnline.ag through their mobile device’s browser and aren’t required to tax their device’s memory with another app download.

The increased accessibility described above is probably the most important feature for many bettors at BetOnline.ag. Having the ability to access the service on any Web-enabled mobile device is a mark in their favor.

In-play betting, a popular option that allows bettors to place wagers as a game unfolds, is available at BetOnline. However the number of live events available for in-play wagering is limited – on the day this review was written, only fourteen events were on the daily in-play schedule.

DESIGN & NAVIGATION

BetOnline’s choice to create a mobile-specific website rather than a native app for iPhones, Androids, and other devices brings with it some design and navigation issues.

The most obvious issue is BetOnline Mobile’s crude look. The color scheme is simple and a little tough on the eyes – odds and other information are shown in gray-scale against a light background. Menu titles are laid out against a field of monochromatic red. This combines to make the screen downright hard to look at.

The second major issue is more of a layout and maintenance problem – mobile.betonline.ag appears to have two distinct “main menu” functions. One, appearing in a column on the left-hand side of the screen, lists the main menu options as “Home,” “Login,” “Join Us,” “Sports,” and “Live Betting.” These are useful navigational tools that give the site a very high mark for ease of use.  Until a user clicks the “Show Main Menu” bar at the top of the screen, which displays a different list of options: “Today’s Event,” “Live Odds,” “Multi-Event,” “Calendar,” and “Rules.” It’s more than a little confusing.

MARKETS

There’s no other way to say it - BetOnline’s mobile betting service has a limited number of available betting markets. At the time of this review, only nine sports are represented; this list includes the “big five” (basketball, baseball, football, hockey, and soccer) and four minor markets, such as martial arts.

There is good news to be found in a description of the service’s markets, depending on what sport a bettor is interested in. The major sports coverage at BetOnline Mobile includes a good variety of available bets. For the NFL, for example, bettors can take point spreads, money line, game totals, and team totals, as well as wagers on first half and individual quarter performance. The less-popular sports are more limited – the ATP tennis section offers bets on the money line only.

A separate Future & Props menu (located beneath the sports menu) includes celebrity wagers, sports futures bets (NBA, MLB, NFL, golf, tennis, and poker), odds for political contests, and even odds available for music and movie awards seasons.

VERDICT

BetOnline.ag is a good fit for certain types of sports bettors. People looking for a flashy native app with extra features (particularly live streaming and a wide variety of betting markets) will be unimpressed. But customers looking for an easily-accessible sports betting service that accepts customers from all over the world, those who don’t mind a bare-bones approach to sports wagering, BetOnline.ag is a perfect fit. Having developed a Web-based app, rather than one designed specifically for iPhones or iOS gadgets, BetOnline Mobile has produced a no-frills service that should appeal to the average “big five” sports betting customer.
